One of the questions that gets asked by those who aren’t sure if they ‘believe’ or not is ‘Do reindeer really know how to fly?’
Here at black & light we went in depth to study the issue, capturing a small male deer (known as a stag), that was hiding out from hunters in our back yard. (Well, kind of our back yard, he could have been anywhere from there to down by the great inland sea called Lake Michigan, about a hundred yards away.)
Upon capture, which was relatively easy, all it took was holding out an apple to him we posed the question, Mr. Stag, do reindeer really know how to fly?
A vigorous nod of the head followed by multiple nose pushes against the camera hanging on one of our sides seemed to prompt some action with the camera. Our most amateurish photographer took the camera, pointed to it, and then held it out to the deer. He backed off a few feet and then began to rear up on his hind legs repeatedly while snorting.
One of us finally got his point and aimed the camera in his direction while he was going through his whatever they were (snorting, rearing, bustling).
Once the camera was pointed in his direction he reared up in the most regal poise possible and we captured his image. Holly later drew his silhouette and now it adorns a candle in his name (we figured since he responded to Mr. Stag it might as well be his name).
Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer,
Had a very shiny nose,
And when you see this candle,
You’ll really want to say ‘It Glows!!!’
